THE Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has issued continuous heavy rain warnings for multiple states, with some areas classified as experiencing hazardous conditions, as the Northeast Monsoon intensifies.
In a statement released on Sunday, METMalaysia Director-General Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip confirmed that the warnings affect the entire state of Terengganu and several districts in Kelantan, including Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Bachok, Machang, and Pasir Puteh.
In Pahang, affected districts include Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin, while in Johor, warnings have been issued for Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Bahru.
Additionally, parts of Sarawak, such as Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, and Kapit (Song), are expected to experience continuous downpours.
The department has also upgraded warnings for Rompin in Pahang and several districts in Johor, including Batu Pahat, Segamat, Tangkak, and Muar, to a “severe” level. Heavy rain is expected to persist in these areas, posing a significant risk to residents.
Other regions forecasted to face continuous rain include Negeri Sembilan (Kuala Pilah, Jempol, and Tampin), Melaka, and additional areas of Pahang, such as Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, and Temerloh. Sarawak will also see rain in Kapit, Song, and Bintulu.
Dr. Mohd Hisham advised the public to stay informed by monitoring updates via METMalaysia’s official website, the myCuaca mobile application, and social media platforms. A hotline (1-300-22-1638) has been set up for further inquiries.
Meteorologists warn that several more episodes of monsoon surges are expected before the Northeast Monsoon concludes in March.
Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise caution, particularly those living in flood-prone regions, as the continuous heavy rainfall may lead to flash floods and landslides.
Stay safe and follow updates from authorities to minimize risks during this challenging weather period. —Jan 12, 2025
