Sime Darby and Icon Offshore form strategic collaboration

SIME Darby Bhd and Icon Offshore Bhd have entered a strategic collaboration for a pilot project to install a Caterpillar (CAT) Remote Fleet Vision (RFV) on an Icon vessel, marking the first such installation on a vessel in Malaysia.

The collaboration involves subsidiaries of the two groups, namely Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd and Icon Ship Management Sdn Bhd.

The collaboration comes from Sime Darby being the authorised distributor and technical support service provider for Caterpillar marine engines and other related products in Malaysia and Brunei, while Icon is an offshore support vessel provider in Malaysia that operates a wide range of logistical support services.

The CAT device will be installed on the vessel Icon Zara.

Sime Darby will be undertaking all installation and monthly collaboration costs for six months from the commissioning date, with Icon having the option to lease the RFV from Sime Darby for 30 months after the six-month period.

The services to be included in the arrangement include daily remote monitoring services, monthly condition monitoring reports, annual engine health checks and periodical engine oil sampling.

“Icon has given us the trust and mandate to handle the repair and overhaul of the vessels all these years. This partnership has indeed supported our growth in the sector.”

“Now, as an extension of our services after several rounds of collaborations, we are pleased to offer Icon the RFV. We have had prior engagements with the Icon management team to present our capabilities and we applaud them for their foresight in adopting this game-changing technology.”

“This venture between both companies is a breakthrough for us in our quest to expand our business,” said Sime Darby Industrial managing director CK Teoh.

Icon managing director Hadian Hashim believes that the installation of the RFV will be a game changer, and believes the collaboration will be beneficial to both parties.

“We are embarking on a new journey with Sime Darby Industrial on a strategic collaboration for maintenance and drydocking, by streamlining our processes and improving the execution at Sime Darby Industrial’s end. We were excited by the proposal on RFV and jumped at the chance to be the first offshore support vessel player to pilot it.”

“The RFV is a game changer for us and we look forward to more exciting solutions from Sime Darby Industrial to redefine the way we operate. We believe this strategic collaboration is beneficial to both parties and will further strengthen our partnership,” said Hadian.

At the end of the trading day, Sime Darby’s shares were last done at RM2.17, up 2 sen, with 1.7 million shares traded, while Icon’s shares were last done at a static 12.5 sen, with 28.2 million shares traded. – Aug 24, 2020
